Life at Two Weeks

So I haven’t blogged in a while. I was actually trying to get the diary up as well as figuring out what it means to sleep again.

He’s two weeks old, so here are my top 10 favorite moments/ thoughts/ experiences so far (in no particular order):

1. Did you know we changed Leland’s middle name three times since he was born? At first we were decided on Jeremiah, and then we thought maybe that was too long. Then we came up with Jacob, but I guess it just didn’t ring well together. So we finally decided on Josiah, for no real particular reason.

2. Normally at Kaiser, Melissa’s supposed to share a room with another patient. With the help of her being an employee AND a few more of Melissa’s mom’s friends, we were able to have single occupancy in the room the entire length of stay. Just walking by other rooms that had two patients gave me the chills.

3. Melissa was up walking around 12 hours after her C-Section, and we left the hospital 52 hours after Leland was born. That’s a little over two days after major surgery. Not many women I know have done that. I said it before, and I’ll say it again, she’s a trooper.

4. Thank you to everyone that visited us at the hospital and after when we came home. We had a total of 37 visitors in the two days we were there. At one point, security was angry at us and called our room a couple of times… Big mistake. Melissa ended up answering the phone and just ripped him a new one. Don’t mess with the lady that just gave birth!

5. When having a newborn, there are definitely ups and downs. We’ve enjoyed every moment of it so far, but try following a pattern of a newborn. It doesn’t sound too hard: eat, sleep, crap… But try doing it at random times of the entire day, on 2-3 hours of sleep.

6. The wonder of car rides. Its like magic sleeping potion for kids. For some reason, they just love it so much, they fall asleep. We’ve taken him out to appointments three times so far, and he just sleeps the entire time- even after. Great stuff.

7. We had to go to the E.R. on St. Patty’s day (sorry to Benny and Pezzellen for having to end the party a little early). Leland has developed this wheeze, kind of like he has loogie stuck in his throat, only he doesn’t know how to clear it. Well, Melissa was concerned and called the advice nurse, who told her to go in to the E.R. Luckily, its pretty common with newborns and since he’s doing everything else completely fine, there’s no real extra precautions needed. Just a few saline drops in the nose and then suction.

8. I was about two minutes late for this one. On Leland’s second doctor visit (first with his Pediatrician), the tech had to do a rectal thermometer check. All exposed, right before he sticks the thermometer in, Leland decides to give everyone a golden shower (which he does about once every six diaper changes). After that’s all cleaned up, he goes in again and guess what Leland does? He craps everywhere! LOL! I can’t make this stuff up. And newborns don’t have hard BM’s… We’re talking the wet mustardy ones! LOL!

9. Colicky. If you don’t know what that means, look it up. It’s what Leland is. I know it has only been two weeks. It gets better after this. He’s had to go through learning how to feed, having a hard time breathing, and circumcision. Its already been a tough road for the kid. But man does he cry. He’s either hungry, sleepy, needs to be changed, or is bored. That’s right, bored. I tried to teach him how to play Call of Duty, but even he doesn’t like that.

10. If I can sum up parenthood in one sentence- The best feeling in the world. Most newborns just sleep a lot. Some don’t even open their eyes for a while. Leland has personality already. Just check out this picture I snapped on St. Patty’s day. We ended up printing it on Easter Cards, hopefully you got one. Yeah, he’s smiling. At 10 days old. FRIGGIN’ AWESOME!

THE BIRTH BLOG

As promised, here's the running diary of the whole ordeal, from start to finish. For some reason this blog wouldn't allow me to attach a Word Document, so I saved it as a JPEG. You may need to zoom in on it. Enjoy the read.

You Can't Prepare At All

I'm sitting here typing the blog out in L&D Room 12 at Kaiser Hayward. Yup, Melissa went into labor earlier today. Baby Boy Mac is slated to come out of womb early Friday morning, March 7. No time to tell the story now, but I do promise a running diary of this fun/exciting/anxious day... And as the title says...

Three random thoughts so far on this great experience:

- Again: as the title says... Seriously, you try and play the whole thing in your head- predict what might and might not happen- and it doesn't even come close to what you actually experience... I still have to put the car seat in the Accord!!!

- It definitely helps if your spouse is employed with the hospital. I don't want to jinx this because as I said, we're still here and its only about halftime of this game so far. But I'd have to say, it is DAMN NICE that Melissa works for Kaiser as a nurse. She doesn't even work in this particular location, but has worked with a few of the nurses/ CRNA's/ Dr.'s here and it has helped tremendously with the whole process. Now, I can only hope that all Kaiser patients receive the same type of treatment, but... Well, you tell me if my assumption is off.

- My love for my wife just keeps growing. I can't imagine going through the pain she has gone through. This part, the labor and delivery, is like the peak of the whole ride, but she's endured damn near 10 body changing, mind blowing, emotional roller-coasting months of this thing called pregnancy. And now we're at the 11th hour of her labor, contractions were riDUNKulous at one point, she gets stabbed with a BIG needle for the epidural, she has tubes/wires/IV's stuck to her, and we're still waiting for baby to pop out... I tell you- I wouldn't make it past the body changing part. I've always said Melissa's a trooper...

Well, gotta go. We're about two hours away...

Dim Sum

After church today, Melissa and I headed over to Mayflower Restaurant at the Great Mall for some Dim-Sum. We landed great parking (which is tough at GM) because of the special "Expecting-Mothers-To-Be" spots right next to the Handicap ones. Friggin' awesome.

Although Dim-Sum isn't Melissa's first choice because of the high volume of shrimp dishes (she unfortunately has an allergy to sweet, succulent foods known as crustaceans), she's always a trooper and makes due... Which is another reason why I married the breezy. Man, can she eat!

There's a few places I'll take advantage of the seafood menu when Melissa's around, and this is one. But I do feel bad- Melissa used to be able to eat all seafood- she even lived in Maine for a while as a kid. But she ate too much of it at a young age, thus building an allergy towards it.

Her allergy ranges from an itchy lip to going into anaphylactic shock (hasn't happen since they found out she was allergic when she was young). She even carries around an EPI pen (for those who don't know, think Pulp Fiction when John Travolta "revived" Uma Thurman)... I pray I'll never have to use it...

I'm also praying our son doesn't inherit any of those allergies. The kid has to be like pops and is willing (and able) to eat anything and everything... Well, he has to at least like the four major food groups: Pork, Beef, Chicken, and Ham...
